Content
In the course of this two-day seminar, participants learn how to best convey the value and significance of their work through oral communication, focusing not only on typical structures of thought and expressions in English, but also on their audience’s expectations. Participants practice presenting their work in a variety of typical conference situations, from the formal panel presentation, to the elevator speech, to networking and small talk.

Learning results
After successful participation in this course, you will have

  • learned the “golden rules” of presenting in English;
  • created an attention-getting opener and strong conclusion for your presentation;
  • used “signposting” language to structure your talk and maximize your audience’s understanding;
  • developed a relaxed and personable, yet professional style with which you may better engage your listeners and communicate your ideas;
  • held a presentation and defended your research results during the following question-and-answer session;
  • practiced “small talk” and other informal networking techniques;
  • polished a concise verbal overview of your research (the “elevator speech”).

Requirements

  • The number of participants is limited to twelve (12).
  • Prerequisite is proficiency in English at the C1 level of competency.
  • Due to time constraints, presentations are generally limited to 8-10 minutes. Please prepare a presentation beforehand. PowerPoint is discouraged so that participants focus more on the correct use of English, verbal and non-verbal communication.

About the seminar leader
Since early 2012, I have taught this seminar at myriad graduate academies in Germany and at the DAAD. I have also presented at numerous international conferences and published articles on my research. For a conference presentation in Würzburg in July 2013, I utilized all the strategies I teach in this class and had my best conference experience to date: numerous questions from an engaged audience, enriching talks with other scholars during the coffee breaks, several requests for my manuscript, and an inquiry about co-editing and publishing a special issue in a scholarly journal.
You may find a list of my conference presentations and invited lectures at http://chicago.academia.edu/CarrieDohe.

Dozentin: Dr. Carrie Dohe

Maximale Teilnehmerzahl: 12 (8 Präsentationen)
